Summit Concrete’s wall system begins showing upward tilt - Kansas City Business Journal

While planning the Zona Rosa shopping center, Rob Brown, construction executive at Steiner + Associates, agreed to try an uncommon process that came with high stakes.

The general contractor, Meyer Bros. Building Co., recommended that Brown hire its Lee’s Summit-based sister company, Summit Concrete, to build architectural site-cast tilt-up walls on five buildings.

Brown said he agreed because he became convinced that the buildings could be constructed faster than if they used plant-cast walls and that the architectural details would give the buildings a sophisticated appearance.

Because construction occurred in the winter, Brown said, “Getting those walls up allowed people to start working inside sooner.”

But the main concern was how the building would look.

“When you think of tilt-up, most of the time you think of an airport or a warehouse,” he said, adding that Steiner is “very pleased with the overall product.”

Summit Concrete’s work at Zona Rosa received accolades in 2009 from the Tilt-Up Concrete Association.

Timothy Lutheran Chooses Tilt-Up

TIMOTHY LUTHERAN | ANOTHER SATISFIED CLIENT

"Summit Concrete assisted our design team in every step of the process, providing not only creative material selections, but timely cost information which allowed our client to make long-term design and cost decisions easily. Concrete tilt-up is not just for warehouse or retail facilities any more." - Pearce Construction

TILT-UP BROUGHT THE PROJECT IN BUDGET

"The overarching project goal was to maximize ministry space while adhering to the church’s restrictive budget. Summit Concrete was asked to evaluate the site-cast tilt-up construction method for comparison with the cost of other traditional commercial construction methods. The savings offered by the site-cast tilt-up method proved instrumental in bringing the project scope within the church’s budget.

In addition to its economical benefits, the site-cast tilt-up method accommodated the casting of several different shapes with intricate reveal and finish details. We were able to incorporate a variety of different materials into the architectural design necessary to achieve a traditional look with a contemporary flare. These materials included cast-in brick veneer, direct-applied stucco and post-applied pre-finished metal panels.

We were amazed at the reduced construction time realized from forming the panels on site and through the well coordinated erection techniques utilized. Rapid enclosure of the weather tight building envelope allowed work to begin more quickly on the interior. Shortening the length of the overall project schedule resulted in significantly reduced construction cost." - Mantel Teter Architects
